About: This project focuses on a display font created by folding Origami sheets. Origami is the art of paper folding. This is an activity popular among children as it helps them develop, construct, and comprehend as it is a form of hands-on learning.
Project Timeline: June - September 2022
Tools Used: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Fontlab
Skills: Typography, Design Thinking, Communication, Visualisation
The goal of the project was to create a font that could be used in the context of children and associated activities.
As the first step of the project, all the capitals of the English alphabet were folded. The letters were folded according to the form that best represent the letters.
2. After that, the positive spaces of the letters were digitized.
3. The folded letters were next digitized using Adobe Illustrator. After brainstorming and ideation, little changes to the form of the letters were made to capture the form of the English alphabet.
After digitizing the origami sheets, I created and edited the font using Font Forge. Above are the English capitals and punctuation marks in the font Kami.
The project of creating an origami-inspired display font provided a rich learning experience at the intersection of art, typography, and hands-on learning. It highlighted the value of drawing inspiration from unconventional sources, adapting traditional techniques to digital mediums, and iteratively refining designs. Moreover, it showcased the potential for collaborative efforts and the significance of meaningful concepts in design. This project served as a testament to the endless possibilities for creativity when diverse disciplines converge.
Challenges
Balance Between Artistic Expression and Functionality: Balancing artistic expression with the practical demands of a functional font was a key challenge. The font needed to be visually captivating while remaining legible across various media and sizes. This learning emphasized the importance of finding harmony between creativity and usability.
Learnings
Fusion of Art and Typography: The project highlighted the intersection of two creative disciplines – art (origami) and typography. It showcased how the aesthetics of origami could be translated into a functional display font. This underscored the importance of drawing inspiration from various sources to create innovative and visually appealing designs.
Spatial Awareness and Precision: Creating an origami-inspired font necessitated a deep understanding of spatial awareness and precision. Each fold in origami impacts the final shape, much like how each curve and line in typography defines a character. This learning emphasized the significance of meticulous attention to detail in both disciplines.
Adaptation of Analog to Digital: Translating a physical origami design into a digital font requires the adaptation of analog techniques to digital tools. This process involved digitizing hand-drawn shapes, refining curves, and ensuring consistent alignment across characters. The project revealed the importance of striking a balance between preserving the tactile charm of origami and accommodating digital design requirements.
